The brief
What the site asked for
The existing deck had rotted through and was no longer safe to use. It sat low and wide across the back of the house, so the replacement had to hold the same generous footprint and level while dealing with a structure that had failed from the ground up.

How we built it
We removed the old deck entirely and rebuilt the structure before laying new 140mm tallowood boards. Tallowood was specified for its density and natural durability — it takes hard wear and holds its colour well in an inland climate with hot summers. Boards run in long uninterrupted lengths across the main platform, with the direction changing on the return section to define the two zones, and the deck edge is clad in matching hardwood so it reads as solid timber rather than a framed box. The finished surface was oiled to seal the boards and bring out the honey tones through the grain.
