Front entry deck rebuild, Avoca Beach

Rebuilt merbau front entry deck at an Avoca Beach home with wire balustrade and bushland outlook

The brief

What the site asked for

The front entry deck is the first thing anyone sees arriving at the house, and it had rotted through — the boards were failing and the structure underneath had gone with them. Being the main approach, the work had to be staged so the owners kept safe access to the front door throughout, and the new deck had to sit precisely to the existing door thresholds and retained balustrade lines.

The build

How we built it

We stripped the deck back to nothing and rebuilt with a fully treated pine subframe set out at correct spans and heights to land flush with the entry thresholds. The 140mm merbau boards were laid in long continuous runs to suit the narrow, elongated shape of the entry, so the eye is drawn along the deck to the doors rather than broken up by joins. Every board is fixed with stainless steel screws — non-negotiable this close to the coast — and the boards were oiled to bring out the deep red of the merbau and seal them ahead of the first wet season.

Before & after
