Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between booking a consultation and the fast online quote?
The consultation path is for decks where the design still needs shaping — sloping blocks, multiple levels, structural work against the house, or a brief that's still an idea. We talk it through, walk the site, and work up a proper scope before any numbers. The fast online quote is for when you already know roughly what you want: send dimensions and photos and we quote remotely, usually within a few days, then book the site visit once you're happy to proceed. Both paths end up in the same place — an on-site measure and a fixed written quote before anything is committed.
How long does a typical deck take to build?
Most single-level decks are on site for one to two weeks. Elevated decks on steel, multi-level work and rebuilds where the old structure has to come out generally run two to four weeks. That's build time only — allow additional lead time for materials, and for engineering or council approval where the height or location requires it.
What happens at the site visit?
We measure properly, check levels and falls, look at how the deck will meet the house, and identify what's underground — stormwater, sewer, services. We'll also talk through board direction, balustrade requirements and where stairs land, because those decisions shape the price. It usually takes 45 minutes to an hour and there's no cost or obligation attached to it.
How does the deposit and payment process work?
Once you accept the quote we take a deposit to lock in your slot and order materials, then invoice at agreed progress stages through the build, with the balance due at handover. Amounts and stages are set out in the written contract before you pay anything, in line with NSW home building requirements. We don't ask for large sums up front.
Do I need council approval for a deck?
Many decks fall under NSW exempt development when they're low enough, small enough and far enough from boundaries. Higher decks, decks on steep or bushfire-affected land, and anything close to a boundary usually need approval. We'll tell you which category your project sits in at the site visit and handle the engineering and documentation where it's needed.
What timber do you build with?
Mostly Australian hardwoods — blackbutt and spotted gum for the majority of our work — with quality composites where the situation calls for them, such as very low-maintenance briefs or heavy pool splash zones. We'll talk through the trade-offs honestly rather than pushing one product.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We hold NSW Contractor Licence 364031C and carry public liability insurance. Certificate details are supplied with the quote.
Do you offer a warranty?
Our workmanship is covered by the statutory warranty periods under the NSW Home Building Act, and material and product warranties are passed through to you. The specifics for your job are set out in writing with the contract.
How far do you travel?
For decks, from Hornsby Heights through to Swansea. The Central Coast and Swansea surrounds are our core area; Hornsby Shire is secondary but we build there regularly. Our carpentry crew service for builders covers the Central Coast, Newcastle and Sydney.
Are you the cheapest?
No, and we're upfront about that. We build one job at a time with a single crew, we don't cut spans or fixings to hit a number, and the structure under the boards is where our attention goes. If price is the only deciding factor, there will always be someone cheaper.
Still deciding which path to take?
Bigger or custom decks start with a consultation. If you already know the shape and size, the fast online quote is quicker.
